Vyacheslav Butusov, singer (Russia), 08/05/2010

Vyacheslav Butusov is one of the most prominent Russian rock musicians. Born in 1961, he was a lead singer of the band 'Nautilus Pompilius' until its disbandment. 'Nau' rushed like a shot onto the Russian rock scene in 1987 beating records in popularity. They were an influential band in the post-punk, new wave wing of Russian rock music. Some of their early hits are popularly associated with the Perestroika period.

'Nautilus' was active until 1997. A few years after, Vyacheslav founded his new 'U-Piter' band. After all, he launched his successful solo career in 2007.

When you cried last time and, if no secret, for what reason?

Crying like shouting that's what I often make on the stage in the performance of my duty. But sometimes, I feel an inner cry and I try to hold it back, so it's lying inside me like an underwater bomb. The reason of that cry is most often a forthcoming despair, a fear of my own powerlessness and defenselessness.

Sometimes it works well to direct these energies to creativity, and then I'm relieved.

There are some events during our life, when it seems as there is no way out. That could be tragic circumstances or such assessment of them. At that time, what's the thing to do?

Now I know, we must believe and hope until the last moment, and no one knows when it comes to the end. I was ready to kill myself before. Now I pray to God, and miracles happen, not tragedies.

Could you please choose any event of last days, weeks or months, that has distressed you? It can be any happening on a local or international scale. How could you comment on it?

I was shocked that, against the background with Icelandic volcano with no victims, the earthquake in China with thousands of victims passed almost unnoticed. I think there are a lot of such examples, when really tragic facts are pushed aside by the events of another scale.

There's always a new danger watching for humanity in its way, always a new temptation we're ready succumb to. What's the danger of our days? And what's the way to avoid this trap?

Dissociation among human beings alerts me a lot since recently. People living next to each other prefer not to believe each other at all. It happens every day when we divert our attention away, to the other side of the Universe, although one's life is not enough to ever reach that side of it.

In addition, I'm quite worried about the fact that world becomes smaller and shallow. But, on the other hand, this may be its way of becoming relieved, getting rid of the irrelevant stuff and unhandiness.

What are the main obstructions to apply humanities principles at our today's life? Could they be solved?

Recently, I was in Jerusalem, waiting for my turn to the Holy Sepulchre. There was a group of geneticists next to me. And jokingly, I asked them whether there is a future for humanity. They all looked at the lady, head of delegation, and she nodded with confidence: "Yes!"

I am inclined to believe that science has to give hope to people and help them to not give up.
